The laboratory rat, like its wild counterpart, is an extremely intelligent animal, probably more so than the other rodents commonly used for biomedical research. This is reflected in its behaviour and, when treated properly and sympathetically, its tolerance to handling and restraint.

Although feared by many. The laboratory rat has long been used in experimental physiology and has made significant contributions to several complex areas of mammalian biology. This chapter presents the taxonomy of laboratory rat and discusses its stocks and strains.

Rats are rodents, and thus members of the largest family of mammals. More is known about the behavior, anatomy, and molecular biology of the laboratory rat than any other animal species. Although its natural history and psychological functions have been described previously in books, this is the first comprehensive description of its behavior/5(3).

In the years since the third edition of this indispensable reference was published, a great deal has been learned about the nutritional requirements of common laboratory species: rat, mouse, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, and vole. With increasing interest towards the manifold activities of eCBs, this book discusses the chemical, biochemical, and molecular biological assays, and activity of distinct elements of the ECS.

The rat found early use in laboratory research in five areas: W. Small suggested that the rate of learning could be measured by rats in a maze; a suggestion employed by John B. Watson for his Ph.D.

dissertation in The first rat colony in America used for nutrition research was started in January by Elmer McCollum, and then nutritive requirements of rats were used by Thomas Burr.

The brown rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, Norwegian rat, Parisian rat, or wharf rat is one of the best known and most common rats.

One of the largest muroids, it is a brown or grey rodent with a head and body length of up to 28 cm (11 in) long, and a tail slightly shorter than : Mammalia. The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents is a single volume, comprehensive book sanctioned by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), covering the rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil and other rodents often used in research.

The enantiomeric enrichment of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) atropisomers has been reported in both wildlife and in humans. The biological processes causing this enrichment are only poorly investigated, a fact that limits the use of enantiomeric fractions (EFs) as a tool to study various processes of environmental relevance.

To further understand these enantioselective processes, this study Cited by: The systemic distribution of soluble antigen injected into the footpad of the laboratory rat.

Rodents (from Latin Rodere, "to gnaw") are mammals of the order Rodentia, which are characterized by a single pair of continuously growing incisors in each of the upper and lower jaws.

About 40% of all mammal species are rodents (2, species); they are found in vast numbers on all continents except Antarctica.

They are the most diversified mammalian order and live in a variety of Class: Mammalia. module in the laboratory application automatically receives the results or transmits them manually to the hematology module. The laboratory application evaluates the data for completeness and accuracy.
